If the new eating out is eating in, then the new going on holiday is staying in your own country. If you holiday within the UK, you save immediately on having to pay for flights, ferry tickets or car hire. You can pack up your own car and head off wherever takes your fancy.

If you really want to get away from it all, head for the Cnip crofting community campsite on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Although the facilities are basic, they are well maintained and you’ll be able to enjoy peace and tranquillity camping on the beach.

In Wales, you can camp just behind a wide surfing beach at Rhossili Bay. Hillend campsite has two fields reserved for families and two fields for surfers and other campers. There are outdoor showers and a new facilities block there.

Away from the coast, the Lake District is also a camping paradise. There are sites galore to choose from in the region, but if you’re going during the school summer holidays, it’s best to book a pitch before you go – places get taken up fast and you don’t want to arrive to find everywhere is fully booked.

What to take

If you’ve been camping before, you probably will have lots of equipment that you can use again. Camping accessories tend to be built to last a few years at least, especially if you buy the middle of the range items rather than the bargain basement ones.

Of course you’ll need sleeping bags and a good quality tent. If you’re taking the kids, then a family tent often works well, as you have a communal area to share as well as separate sleeping compartments.
